Steel Aces Damage System: Component Damage and Ballistics Explained
How Steel Aces' component-based damage works — module hits, armor penetration, realistic ballistics, and why shot placement beats spray in Armative Studios' tank MMO.
The damage system is Steel Aces' defining mechanic and the reason its community plays it instead of the bigger tank games: shots damage individual components, not an abstract health pool. This guide explains the system as officially revealed.
Modules, Not Health Bars
Every tank carries modules — tracks, engine, gun, crew stations, ammo racks — and incoming shells damage whichever module they strike. Consequences are physical and immediate: a broken track immobilizes you, engine damage slows you, crew casualties degrade performance. A tank at full nominal health but with a destroyed gun is effectively out of the fight.
Armor Penetration and Angles
Whether a shell penetrates depends on armor thickness at the impact angle — angling your hull multiplies effective armor, and flat-side exposure is the classic beginner death. The ballistics model makes long-range shots arrive at steeper angles, which changes what armor can stop them.
Ballistics: Shells That Fly
Shells follow realistic trajectories — gravity drop over distance, flight time, and impact angle all modeled. Practical consequences: leading moving targets is a skill, ridge-line firing needs elevation awareness, and long-range sniping rewards knowing your gun's drop.
The Skill Loop
Shot placement is the meta-skill: where you hit decides the fight. Flat armor, exposed tracks, rear engine decks — the game rewards knowing tank layouts, which is why the community studies armor schemes the way flight-sim pilots study airframes.
Practicing Safely
The game is free-to-play and EA-updated frequently — every session trains the aiming skill. The beginner guide covers the first-session flow, and tank list covers which vehicles carry which armor schemes.
