Steel Aces Tank Controls: Driving and Gun Handling After the Oct 17 Rework

How tank driving and gun handling work in Steel Aces — the reworked movement model from the October 17 update, terrain effects, and gun handling fundamentals.

Steel Aces' driving model was overhauled in the October 17, 2026 update — the largest pre-launch patch — reworking tank driving, gun handling, and nearly every system ahead of Early Access. This page covers the confirmed handling model.

Driving: Weight Is Real

Tanks have mass that matters: acceleration, braking distance, and terrain interaction all model weight. Hull-down positioning, slope climbs, and soft ground all change how your tank moves. The rework made driving feel like operating a vehicle rather than steering a cursor.

Gun Handling

Gun handling — turret traverse speed, elevation limits, dispersion on the move — was reworked alongside driving. Practical fundamentals: stop to shoot accurately where possible, know your depression limits behind ridges, and respect traverse speed when tracking close targets.

Terrain as a System

Terrain interacts with both systems: slopes affect hull angles (and therefore armor effectiveness), soft ground slows tracks, and ridgelines define what you can see and shoot — the positioning layer builds directly on this.

Keyboard, Mouse, Gamepad

Controls support keyboard+mouse and gamepad. Bindings are configurable; most players run aim on mouse with drive on WASD and find the gamepad's analog throttle useful for fine positioning.
